Your 'Stuck Thoughts' are NOT Your Identity

September 05, 20242 min read

What is Your Self-Identity?

During a group conversation recently about ‘stuck thoughts’, it was interesting and saddening to see how some people identified so much with negative thoughts and negative beliefs about themselves, to the point where it has unconsciously become their self-identity.

In my field of life coaching & life therapies for personal development, the concept of identity plays a pivotal role. Our identity, the way we see ourselves, is often shaped by a lifetime of experiences, beliefs, and thoughts. For some, this self-perception is empowering, leading them to live fulfilling and successful lives. But for others, their identity is coloured by negative thoughts and beliefs, which can become so deeply ingrained that they form the very foundation of who they believe they are.

Even when we recognise the impact of these negative beliefs, the idea of changing them can be daunting. Why? Because our identity, even when it’s built on negativity, offers a sense of familiarity and comfort. The thought of stepping into a new way of thinking, one that’s healthier and more fulfilling, can feel like stepping into the unknown. It’s not just about changing thoughts; it’s about redefining who we are at our core.

This fear of losing oneself, of shedding the identity we’ve carried for years, can keep us trapped. It’s as if we’re standing on the edge of a cliff, knowing that we need to leap into the unknown to truly live, but paralysed by the fear of what lies on the other side. This is why so many people remain stuck, even when they know deep down that change is necessary for their growth and well-being.

But here’s the truth: your identity is not set in stone. It’s a dynamic, ever-evolving aspect of who you are. While breaking through the programming of negative thoughts and beliefs can be challenging, it’s also incredibly liberating. Yes, there will be uncertainty, and yes, there may be moments where you feel like you’ve lost your way. But in this journey, you’ll discover a new, more authentic version of yourself—one that’s capable of living with great health, fulfilment, and success.

The key to transformation lies in embracing the unknown and trusting that your true self, unburdened by negativity, is waiting to emerge. It’s about stepping out of your comfort zone and into a world where you define your identity based on self-love, positivity, and empowerment. This is where healing and growth truly begin.

Embrace change and the opportunity to be your own change-maker, even if it means losing your current self-identity. If it’s based on negative thoughts and limiting beliefs, you don’t want those anyway. Set yourself free and allow your true self to heal and grow so you can live the life you want to live.
